Creativity isn’t a talent...

by Blue Flags Realty

Creativity isn’t a talent, it is a way of operating.

This quote stopped me in my tracks the other night after our girls went to bed. I was apologizing to Kurt for the mess left behind - beads, yarn, elastic string, paint, coloring books- the aftermath of two little girls and their mom in full creative mode.

He laughed and said, “Well we always knew they’d be creative.”

And without thinking, I responded, “Of course! They get it from you!”

He stopped me right there, “No, Meg. You’re creative too. You taught them how to do all of this!”

That hit me hard.

Because for most of my life, I didn’t consider myself “creative.” I thought creativity was something you either had or you didn’t… and I definitely thought I didn’t.

But when I really look, I realize I’ve always operated from creativity.

I wanted to build a kind of life that didn’t exist. That’s why I went into dance and eventually real estate. Both careers where there was always an opportunity to build something new and many times from scratch!

So why are we talking about creativity?!

Because if you are anything like most of the agents I am speaking with, (myself included!), your business has slowed…Deals are harder to keep together. The market is tougher.

This is where creativity comes in…

It’s the way you solve problems.

It’s the way you listen to your clients and find opportunities and solutions that aren’t obvious.

It's the way you adapt when the market shifts, a deal falls apart, or a client changes their search criteria.

Operating from creativity in real estate right now isn’t about art. It is about adaptability. Being open, flexible, curious and always building.

Here are some ways you can try this out.

What is your biggest challenge?

Finding clients? Can you ramp up your social media presence to engage your sphere, can you finally get that e-blast out that you have been meaning to send for months, can you intentionally text and call your past clients.

Keeping deals together? Can you set better expectations at the beginning, can you send out weekly emails to your client stating where you are in the process, can you be more intentional about your communication.

Feeling completely stuck? Can you boldly try a new marketing strategy, attend an out of the box networking event, have coffee with an agent who is succeeding and ask them how they are doing it.

Start thinking outside the box. What has been working for you, is no longer working! Change it up and create your solution.

So no, you don’t need to be “naturally creative” to succeed in real estate.

But you do need to operate like someone who’s willing to create.

This business isn’t about repeating the same things day in and day out. That’s why most of us love it so much!!

So give yourself the freedom to experiment, to make a mess with glitter and tape!

You are more creative than you think. If you are in this business, you HAVE to be!
